The Marker Who Became Your Advocate

Solomon Mhlanga spent 23 years in marking, assessment and quality assurance for Grade 12 Economics — serving as Provincial Appointed Chief Marker, Official Examiner, and National SBA Moderator.

Every November, thousands of answer scripts landed on his desk. And every November, the same heartbreaking pattern played out.

"A learner would write three pages. They knew the content. But they wrote around the marks instead of into them. They didn't structure their answer the way the marking guideline expected. And I had to fail them anyway. Not because they didn't understand Economics. Because nobody taught them how the marker thinks."

The tragedy Solomon watched in the marking room every November is happening everywhere — in HR inboxes, on smartphone screens, in business pitches. Talented, capable South Africans are failing. Not because they're not good enough. There's an invisible gap between what the evaluator expects and what the candidate submits.
